Ancient City of Xanthos

This guide to the Ancient City of Xanthos follows a Lycian capital that chose to burn itself rather than surrender, twice: once around 540 BC before the Persian general Harpagus, and again in 42 BC before the Roman general Brutus, fresh from helping kill Julius Caesar. It follows the historian Herodotus's account of who survived the first burning and Plutarch's account of Brutus riding in tears around the walls during the second. Look toward the theatre ahead, then west to the weathered stone beside it.
