Wat Mahadhatu Yuvaraj Rangsarit Rajavaramahavihar
3, 5 Thanon Maha Rat, Khwaeng Phra Borom Maha Ratchawang, Khet Phra Nakhon, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10200
Royal Buddhist temple enshrining a Buddha relic, home to Thailand's oldest monastic university.
Wat Mahadhatu Yuvaraj Rangsarit predates Bangkok itself, and in 1889 King Chulalongkorn chose this ancient relic temple as the birthplace of Thailand's first monastic university, now Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya. The guide moves from the relic enshrined inside to the sprawling amulet market crowding the road outside, and to the meditation center that still teaches Vipassana practice today. Step past the amulet stalls to find where the sacred and the commercial actually meet.
