Lau Pa Sat

This guide to Lau Pa Sat follows an iron building's improbable journey: cast in Glasgow by the Walter MacFarlane foundry in 1894 on commission from Municipal Engineer James MacRitchie, shipped in pieces to Singapore, and bolted together on reclaimed land above Telok Ayer Bay. It picks up decades later, when the market, already a national monument, was fully dismantled so the MRT could be tunnelled beneath it, its cast-iron pieces trucked out to storage in Jurong before making the trip back.
