National Museum

This guide to the National Museum in Stockholm follows architect Friedrich August Stuler's problem of roofing enormous gallery halls without stone heavy enough to collapse them, and the unusual fix he chose. Raising the Renaissance-palace-style building took about twelve years, with masons chiseling its limestone facades using steam-powered saws imported for the job.
