Kulturhuset Stadsteatern

This guide to Kulturhuset Stadsteatern in Stockholm follows architect Peter Celsing, who won a 1965 competition to design a culture house, theater and bank together and chose to make the culture house look as unassuming as the bank beside it, wrapped in glass and oxidized brass like a shop window. It traces the building's slow, phased construction, the years its finished theater hall spent occupied by parliament while their own chamber was rebuilt, and Celsing's death in 1974 before the whole complex was inaugurated. Look closely at the brass edging on the glass wall: it dates to that original 1970s construction.
