The Victor

This guide to the Victor monument in Belgrade's fortress follows a bronze nude by the sculptor Ivan Meštrović, commissioned in nineteen thirteen and then left waiting through a world war in a basement. It turns on the late nineteen-twenties, when newspapers mocked, moralists objected, and the city argued over what a naked body in its main square might do to its citizens.
