St. Mark Orthodox Church

This guide to St. Mark's Church in Belgrade starts not with its builders but with the ground beneath it, a hill of pale limestone with a very long memory. It follows the Roman and Ottoman stonecutters who hollowed Tašmajdan out, the bats of its caves, and the Serbian prince who turned the hill into a burial ground. Best heard on the church steps, facing the striped walls.
