Republic Square

This guide to Republic Square in Belgrade starts in twenty eighteen, when crews rebuilding the city's favourite meeting point struck old masonry under the paving. It reaches back to the Stambol Gate, the Austrian-built entrance on the road to Istanbul, and to Prince Mihailo, the ruler who wanted it gone. Stand near the National Theatre, where the gate once opened onto the square.
