Kneza Mihaila

This guide to Kneza Mihaila, Belgrade's main pedestrian street, is about the street as a built thing rather than a backdrop: the stone under your feet, where it was quarried, and a six-month dig in the late nineteen-eighties led by the architect Branislav Jovin. It also reaches back to the eighteen-sixties plan of Emilijan Josimović and the surfaces the road wore before. Best heard standing mid-street among the oaks, looking down at the paving.
