Kalemegdan

This guide to Kalemegdan in Belgrade opens in April eighteen sixty-seven, on the day the last Ottoman commander of the fortress stood before Prince Mihailo Obrenović with the keys of the city. It reaches back five summers to a quarrel at a neighbourhood fountain called Čukur, and to the cannons that once looked down from these ramparts on the Serbian town. Best heard from the walls above the meeting of the Sava and the Danube.
