Tornado Tower

This guide to Doha's Tornado Tower starts on the twenty-seventh floor, inside a spinning studio called The Indoorster where cyclists ride beneath the building's hourglass twist. It traces how German firm SIAT Architekten and local engineers gave the tower its name, wrapping an exposed steel diagrid around the structure between 2006 and 2008. After sunset, German light artist Thomas Emde's rig sends color swirling up the diagonal struts in four directions at once, choreographed into what he calls lighting scores.
