Jardim do Morro

This guide to Jardim do Morro in Porto returns to 29 March 1809, when Napoleon's army broke into the city from the north and thousands fled toward a bridge of anchored boats near this spot, trying to reach Gaia. Accounts still disagree on what broke the crossing, whether it was the crush of the crowd, soldiers, or panicked cavalry, but they agree on the result in the river below where you now stand. Look up to your right at the great iron arch of the Dom Luís bridge, built decades later by an engineer trained under Gustave Eiffel.
