Chapel of Souls

This guide to the Chapel of Souls in Porto traces how a plain white chapel on a busy shopping street was wrapped, starting in 1929, in more than fifteen thousand hand-painted azulejo tiles by artist Eduardo Leite, fired in a Lisbon workshop and styled after eighteenth-century originals. It looks closely at what those tiles actually depict, scenes of saintly death and martyrdom, including the chapel's own namesake, Saint Catherine.
