Castelo do Queijo

This guide to Castelo do Queijo in Porto follows the cheese-shaped granite fort from its construction in the sixteen sixties, during Portugal's war against Spain, through the French engineer and Portuguese navy captain who turned the plans into triangular granite walls. It lingers on 1832, when Portugal's civil war between two royal brothers pulled the fort into real combat and left its walls scarred by cannon fire. Look for the small pentagon-shaped turrets crowning the walls as you walk around the rock the fort sits on.
