Avenida dos Aliados

This guide to Avenida dos Aliados in Porto opens on 1 February 1916, when Portugal's president ordered an entire neighborhood, Laranjal, torn down to make way for a grand new avenue up from the old city center. It follows the avenue's renaming for the Allies after the First World War, and the decades-long construction of the town hall tower at its far end, designed by Correia da Silva starting in 1920. Look up at that tower and guess how many years passed before anyone actually worked inside it.
