Wola

This guide to Wola in Warsaw begins on 5 August 1944, five days into the Warsaw Uprising, when Hitler ordered the district, a century-old hub of factories and tens of thousands of workers, cleared of everyone living there. It follows Oskar Dirlewanger, a convicted criminal turned SS commander, and the police units who moved with him through Wola factory by factory as the order was carried out. The neighborhood's factories once turned out beer, locomotives, rifles and light bulbs.
