Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

This guide to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw opens with a grieving mother in a Lwow cemetery in nineteen twenty-five, handed an impossible task: choosing which of three identical coffins would represent every unidentified defender of Poland. It follows the chosen soldier, a boy said to be barely fourteen, to Warsaw's Saint John's Cathedral, where a monsignor asks the question that still hangs in the air: who are you. On the second of November that year, eight recipients of Poland's highest military honor carried him beneath the arcades of the Saxon Palace.
