New Town Market

This guide to New Town Market in Warsaw centers on a cast-iron well topped with a girl riding a unicorn, the coat of arms of a once-independent town chartered by Duke Janusz the First of Masovia in 1408. It follows how this rival settlement kept its own council, market rights, and law for nearly four centuries, rebuilding its town hall after fires in 1544 and a Swedish burning in 1656, only to be folded into Warsaw and lose that hall for good in 1818.
