Monument to the Ghetto Heroes

This guide to the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes in Warsaw turns on a wet December afternoon in 1970, when West German chancellor Willy Brandt came to lay a wreath at this bronze wall and did something no aide had planned for him to do. It reaches back to the bronze figures above, led by resistance leader Mordechai Anielewicz, and to the sculptor, a Warsaw Jew who had fled the ghetto's liquidation and lost family in it, and the stone the Nazis themselves had shipped for their own monuments.
