Jewish Historical Institute

This guide to the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw opens with SS general Jürgen Stroop torching the building in 1943 as a coda to crushing the ghetto uprising, then reaches back to its earlier life as a Judaic library and research institute. It follows historian Emanuel Ringelblum's secret Oneg Shabbat archive, gathered here under cover of a Saturday soup kitchen, and the tin boxes and milk cans in which that evidence was buried nearby as deportations accelerated.
