City Zoological Garden in Warsaw

This guide to the City Zoological Garden in Warsaw centers on director Jan Żabiński and his wife Antonina during the Second World War, after German bombs and soldiers emptied the cages of their animals. Using a cover story that let him pass in and out of the nearby Warsaw ghetto, Jan began bringing people out and hiding them on the grounds, while Antonina ran a warning system from her piano, playing one piece for danger and another for safety. Some guests slept a single night in an empty animal stall before moving on, others stayed for months in the Żabińskis' own house on these grounds.
