Lima Main Square

This guide to Lima Main Square traces the ground back to Taulichusco, the local curaca who welcomed Francisco Pizarro with food and gifts, only to have his palace built over by the newcomer's house. It follows Pizarro's founding of the "City of Kings" on January 18, 1535, the tree he buried at its center as a warning to rivals, and his own killing six years later inside the walls he raised. The cathedral, archbishop's palace, and municipal building still ring the square exactly as he laid it out, nearly five centuries ago.
