Government Palace of Peru

This guide to the Government Palace of Peru traces the ground beneath it back to a huaca sacred to the Rimac valley and to the house of Taulichusco, Lima's last local lord, before Francisco Pizarro built his own residence directly on top of it in 1535. It follows Pizarro's rule from that plot to the afternoon of June 26, 1541, when thirteen men crossed the square and forced their way inside while he sat down to dinner. Four of his men died holding the stairs before he was overwhelmed.
