Reguliersgracht

This guide to Reguliersgracht in Amsterdam opens in 1901, when the city ordered the canal filled in for a tram line, and follows the portrait painter and critic Jan Veth, who responded with a pamphlet he titled Urban Disgrace. It traces his argument, drawn from what had happened to the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal after it was filled in, and sets it against the seven aligned stone bridges the plan would have erased. Look from the corner where this canal meets the Herengracht, where as many as fifteen bridges line up in a single view.
