Lee Jetty

This guide to Lee Jetty in Penang Island opens in the early 1960s, when surveyors marked the Lee clan's land for a new ferry terminal and the whole community dismantled its stilt houses plank by plank to rebuild a little further along the shore. It traces the clan back to a village near Xiamen in Fujian province, where ancestors arrived as coolies in the late 1800s and crowded into a lane known as Boatmen's Alley, ferrying sailors and cargo out to anchored ships. Walk down the wooden planks past the small temple with its glowing archways, where laundry still hangs on the line above the boats.
