Georgetown UNESCO Historic Site

This guide to Georgetown's historic core in Penang Island starts at the corner of Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, where a muezzin's call, temple bells and a church organ can all be heard within the same few hundred metres. It traces that back to 1786, when the British East India Company's Francis Light claimed the cape and set a rule for who could build where along this one street. Along the way it stops at the Kuan Yin Teng temple, the Kapitan Keling Mosque, the Sri Mahamariamman Temple and Saint George's Church, each raised by a different community between the 1720s and 1810s.
