D. Pedro V. Theatre

This guide to the D. Pedro V Theatre in Macau follows the first Western-style theatre built in China, raised in 1860 by the city's Portuguese community and named for a king who would die the following year at twenty-four. It traces the segregated seating that once divided Portuguese and Chinese audiences, and the early-twentieth-century night Puccini's Madama Butterfly had its Asian premiere on this small colonial stage.
