This guide to the Fortress of San Giovanni, high above Kotor, starts with a spring morning in sixteen sixty-seven and a sound rising out of the rock. It follows nearly four centuries of Venetian rule, the walls dragged up this mountain against the Ottoman Empire, and the corsairs and pashas who came to test them.
