Saint Nicholas’ Church

This guide to Saint Nicholas' Church in Perast, near Kotor, begins on the morning of the fifteenth of May, sixteen fifty-four, when an Ottoman army came over the hills toward a small seafaring town. It follows the unlikely company who stood in its way, including mountain outlaws, and the local priest-poet Andrija Zmajevic, whose words still hang on the church. Best heard standing in the square, facing the church's western wall.
