Fuente de Mouassine

This guide to the Fuente de Mouassine in Marrakesh centers on Sultan Abdallah al-Ghalib, who took the throne in 1557 and remade the Mouassine quarter, then one of the city's two Jewish quarters, forcing its community out to resettle them across town. It follows the fountain he built there in 1562, framed as an act of Islamic charity, fed by channels running down from the Atlas Mountains. Stand at the iron grille and look up at the carved cedar canopy above the basin, its underside painted with an eight-pointed star.
