Tamaudun

This guide to Tamaudun in Okinawa follows the royal tomb of the Second Sho dynasty, built in fifteen oh one to hold King Sho En's remains and, eventually, seventeen Ryukyu kings alongside queens and princes. It tracks how the Battle of Okinawa's shellfire and looting reached these stone doors in nineteen forty-five, and how the tomb was rebuilt afterward as a stone copy of a wooden royal residence, guarded by carved shisa lions. Along the way it describes the old Ryukyu funeral custom of washing a family member's bones by hand before laying them to rest a second time.
