Wakamiya Shrine

This guide to Wakamiya Shrine in Nara traces why a torchlit procession still moves through this precinct every December seventeenth, nearly nine centuries after it began. It starts in 1135, when priests at neighboring Kasuga Taisha, facing epidemic and unrest, invited a second deity to settle here, and follows regent Fujiwara no Tadamichi's prayer a year later that the new ritual should never stop. The deer wandering the park nearby are treated as messengers of the elder god said to have arrived on a white deer.
