Seison-kaku

This guide to Seison-kaku in Kanazawa tells the story of Takako Takatsukasa, who married the twelfth lord of the Kaga domain at twenty only to spend barely three years beside him across eighteen years of marriage before his death in 1824. Though she never had children of her own, she raised his children by other women as hers, including the boy who became the thirteenth lord and never stopped calling her mother. In 1863, decades after her husband died, that son had rooms from his father's old palace physically moved and rebuilt inside this garden villa for her. Stand in the garden and look toward the long corridor that runs beside it, built for a mother who was never, by blood, his own.
