Saigawa-Ōhashi Bridge

This guide to the Saigawa-Ohashi Bridge in Kanazawa opens on a strange detail stamped into the steel overhead: the name of an English industrial town, thousands of miles from this river. It follows engineer Sekiba Shigeki's decision to rebuild the crossing in 1924, a year after the Great Kanto earthquake crippled Japan's own steel industry, and traces the pale blue Warren truss that carried a streetcar line down its center until 1967.
