Miyajima Public Aquarium

This guide to Miyajima Public Aquarium near Hiroshima explains why the 2011 rebuild was deliberately disguised as a low, timber-toned building in Itsukushima Shrine's red and white colors, so it would not break the view of the sacred island's floating torii gate. It follows that disguise inside, through a lobby that keeps the shrine palette going, into a two-story shell built around tanks you can view from both above and below. Nine themed zones run from the mudflats outside the door to the open sea, using the shoreline itself, including real oyster rafts, as part of the exhibit.
