Hiroshima Botanical Garden

This guide to Hiroshima Botanical Garden follows a four-hundred-year-old Australian baobab, thick as a small house, standing on land cleared for development in the Kimberley region of Western Australia with bulldozers on the way. It traces how a string of fortunate connections spared the tree instead, and how in July 2017 workers excavated its entire seven-ton root ball and began an eleven-thousand-kilometer journey from Kununurra to a rebuilt greenhouse here, where it was replanted that October. For two years afterward nobody could promise the transplanted tree would ever settle into its new soil. Look for the trunk, roughly two meters across, in front of the great greenhouse.
