Etajima

This guide to Etajima near Hiroshima follows a Navy diver into a shallow wreck off Oahu in June 1960, its torpedoes still loaded decades after Pearl Harbor. It traces a Japanese Type A midget submarine built in secrecy through the 1930s, cramped for a pilot and engineer, and the young lieutenant, Shigemi Furuno, who commanded it into the attack on December 7, 1941.
