Rokkakudo

This guide traces how a Hakata pharmacist named Toyoshiroya Eizo, flush with money from patent medicines, paid in 1842 to raise a six-sided hall roofed almost entirely in turtle-shell tiles. He brought in a Nagoya carpenter from a long line of temple builders to construct it around an unusual centerpiece: a hexagonal cabinet that turns, carrying six carved images past the doorway. Look up at the tiled roof on your way in, laid in an old technique called gyoki-buki.
