Torre dei Lamberti

This guide to Torre dei Lamberti in Verona introduces its two medieval bells: Rengo, whose bronze toll once marched the condemned to the scaffold and rang out for war, famine and mourning, and the smaller Marangona, cast alongside it in 1295 to wake and close the working day and warn of fire in the city's wooden roofs. It also follows the tower itself, begun by a family named Lamberti in 1172 who then vanish completely from the record, and the lightning strike in 1403 that tore off its top. Look up as you approach: the brick gives way to paler marble partway up, marking where later builders finally finished the job.
