Parrocchia di San Giorgio in Braida

This guide to the Parrocchia di San Giorgio in Braida in Verona opens with a scrap of Paolo Veronese's own household accounts, scribbled with studies for a horseman who would later ride into his altarpiece The Martyrdom of Saint George, painted in 1566. It follows Veronese's return to Verona to marry his teacher's daughter, and turns outside to the bell tower begun by Bernardino Brugnoli, nephew of architect Michele Sanmicheli, meant to rival the Torre dei Lamberti. Brugnoli died young, and the tower stopped rising not long after.
