Terrazza Panoramica Passeggiata del Gianicolo

This guide to the Gianicolo terrace in Rome traces the noon cannon that has boomed over the city since 1847, when Pope Pius IX ordered it to synchronize the city's church bells. It follows the same Pope's decision two years later to send a French army against the fledgling Roman Republic, and Giuseppe Garibaldi's volunteers who held this hill against them. The long promenade behind the terrace is lined with stone busts of the volunteers who fell here in that 1849 fight.
