Tuttomondo (Keith Haring)

This guide to Tuttomondo, Keith Haring's mural on a convent wall in Pisa, follows how a Tuscan student's chance encounter with Haring on a Manhattan street led to this commission after Florence turned it down. It traces Haring's arrival in June nineteen eighty-nine, already carrying an AIDS diagnosis, and how he painted the wall freehand from scaffolding with no sketch, working from the upper left corner down over four days while Pisans gathered to watch.
