Sinagoga Pisa

This guide to the Sinagoga Pisa, tucked up an ordinary staircase on Via Palestro, follows a small brick oven built to bake matzah, and the freedom that made it possible: in 1570, Florence and Siena walled their Jewish communities into ghettos while Pisa did not. It follows the community's move here in 1595 and its purchase of the building in 1647, then later restorations by architect Marco Treves after a fire and lightning strike. Climb the same staircase the congregation has used since the sixteenth century to reach the hall above.
