Santo Sepolcro

Santo Sepolcro in Pisa is often called the Templars' church, but the guide sets out to correct that: this octagonal building near the Arno actually belonged to the Hospitallers of Saint John, who ran a hospital here for pilgrims returning from Jerusalem with fevers and wounds. Built starting around 1113 and first documented decades later, its stone cone roof and drum of eight pillars were designed by Diotisalvi, echoing the real Church of the Holy Sepulchre before he turned to Pisa's Baptistery. Inside, a well once used by a local nun to treat the sick still sits quietly.
