This guide to the Passeggiata degli Innamorati on Lake Como starts with a walkway that shouldn't exist: an iron and stone catwalk drilled straight into a cliff above Varenna, where the mountains drop straight into the water with nowhere for a path to go. It follows the roughly five hundred meters of catwalk from the ferry dock to the old village center, all of it pinned to vertical rock, and the red-painted railing that locals say was chosen for love.
