Guvano Beach

This guide to Guvano Beach in Cinque Terre follows a stretch of sand and grey stone reachable for three decades only through a kilometre and a half of pitch-dark, abandoned railway tunnel. It traces the international crowd of nudists and hippies who camped here through the 1970s, effectively running their own small republic, and a clash with local villagers that Cinque Terre still tells on itself. A landslide tore through the footpath down from the coastal trail in 2012, years before the tunnel itself was sealed.
