Magen David Synagogue

This guide to the Magen David Synagogue in Mumbai begins with David Sassoon fleeing Baghdad in 1829 after a brutal governor turned on him, arriving in Bombay in 1832 with little more than his family and his trade contacts. It follows his rise through the opium trade that connected India to China, the fortune that made him the Merchant Prince of Bombay, and the hospital, library, schools and synagogue he built with it, completed the same year he died. Look up at the bright blue facade and the clock tower rising above Byculla, unusual for any synagogue.
