Jehangir Art Gallery

This guide to the Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai starts in 1947, when a group of young painters calling themselves the Progressive Artists wanted to make work as urgently modern as newly independent India, but had nowhere in Bombay to show it. It follows an unlikely champion, nuclear scientist Homi Bhabha, and painter K. K. Hebbar, as they spent years persuading Parsi industrialist Sir Cowasji Jehangir to fund a proper exhibition space for the city's artists.
