Metzitzim Beach

This guide to Metzitzim Beach follows Edna Ashkenazi, whose father bought a plot of this sand in 1950, and traces the beach's names through the decades, from a naval training school in the 1920s to the Sheraton Hotel, until a 1972 comedy film shot here gave it the name that stuck. It also follows the bohemian families who quietly built homes behind the dunes starting in the 1950s, on land no one ever gave them clean legal title to.
