HaBima Square

This guide to HaBima Square in Tel Aviv traces the Habima theater troupe from a ban on Hebrew-language performance in Czarist Russia, through training in Moscow and a slow move west, to its 1931 arrival in the young city. It also follows the square itself, which spent over fifty years as a parking lot before artist Dani Karavan redesigned it, and the tens of thousands of protesters who later filled it during 2011's social justice demonstrations. Look for the sandy patches Karavan cut into the pavement as an echo of the dunes beneath the city.
